fortiss is the research institute of the Free State of Bavaria for the development of software-intensive systems with headquarters in Munich. The scientists at the institute cooperate in research, development and transfer projects with universities and technology companies in Bavaria, Germany and Europe. The focus is on research into state-of-the-art methods, techniques and tools for the development of software- and AI-based technologies for dependable, secure cyber-physical systems such as the Internet of Things (IoT). fortiss is organized in the legal form of a non-profit limited liability company. Shareholders are the Free State of Bavaria (majority shareholder) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V.

At the Human-centered Engineering competence field, we focus on the intersection between human-computer interaction and AI. The human-centered design of intelligent systems is the overarching theme of our research.
We are currently working together with the aviation industry on making AI certifiable within airplanes and the systems connected to them. Our task is to explore the human factors for the certification concept and we are therefore building up a test scenario and a low-fidelity simulator to test the prototype of our user interface concepts. The goal is to test a novel AI-based interface with real pilots in a scenario which is realistic enough to produce valid test results. We are looking for someone who could help us build this up.

Student Assistant (M/F/D) - Prototyping novel aviation user interfaces
Your tasks:
  • Setting up a cockpit mockup based on a combination of commercial flight simulation software (X-Plane), flight simulation hardware, and a tablet connected to the flight simulation to run a novel prototypical flight assistance application 
  • Contributing to the user study design 
Your profile:
  • User-oriented and pragmatic maker with hands-on coding/prototyping experience 
  • You set priorities and complete task goal-oriented 
  • Independent worker and eager to explore new technologies and setups 
  • You should feel comfortable to learn, or already have experience with C/ Delphi, UDP or similar technologies 
  • You have knowledge regarding aviation and airplane interfaces? Perfect! 
  • Since the technical setup will limit what will be possible within the user study, you should be able to explore user study scenarios within the technical limitations 
  • Excellent communication skills in English, basic skills in German is a plus
  • You should still be a registered student
  • you should be able to contribute to user interface designs and participate in user-centered development processes
