fortiss is the research institute of the Free State of Bavaria for the development of software-intensive systems with headquarters in Munich. The scientists at the institute cooperate in research, development and transfer projects with universities and technology companies in Bavaria, Germany and Europe. The focus is on research into state-of-the-art methods, techniques and tools for the development of software- and AI-based technologies for dependable, secure cyber-physical systems such as the Internet of Things (IoT). fortiss is organized in the legal form of a non-profit limited liability company. Shareholders are the Free State of Bavaria (majority shareholder) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V.

At the Human-centered Engineering competence field, we focus on the intersection between human-computer interaction and AI. The human-centered design of intelligent systems is the overarching theme of our research.
We are currently working together with the aviation industry on making AI certifiable within airplanes and the systems connected to them. Our task is to explore the human factors for the certification concept and we are therefore building up a test scenario and a low-fidelity simulator to test the prototype of our user interface concepts. The goal is to test a novel AI-based interface with real pilots in a scenario which is realistic enough to produce valid test results. We are looking for someone who could help us build this up.

Student Assistant (M/F/D) - Human-AI interaction design for aviation
Your tasks:
  • Contributing to the design and execution of the user study.
  • Refinement of user interface of the prototype.
  • Exploration of further design ideas.
  • Preparing the flight simulator according to user study requirements.
Your profile:
  • You understand the importance of design for the safety of critical applications like pilot assistance systems.
  • You have experience in conducting user research and user studies.
  • You have experience in creating user experiences and designing understandable interactions.
  • You can work independently on exploratory, not narrowly specified tasks.
  • You can transfer between specific issues and abstract discussions.
  • Optional: You have experience with prototyping tools like Figma, Framer etc.
  • Optional: You have some experience with web development and networking technologies.
  • Optional: You have knowledge regarding aviation and cockpit user interfaces.
