Student Assistant - Deterministic Wireless Multipoint networking – Industrial IoT (m/f/d)

The IIoT competence center of fortiss focuses on the development of computational and networking architectures for advanced IoT applications and use-cases in sectors such as Mobility, Smart Cities, Manufacturing, etc. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: Edge computing, in particular decentralised edge architectures; wireless IoT; deterministic wireless networking; dynamic container orchestration; information-centric networking; Edge AI.

We are looking for 2 motivated students to support the work under development in our DetNetWiFi project, focusing on the integration of deterministic wireless mechanisms in manufacturing environments. In this project you will work with our network simulator ns-3 wireless deterministic framework (ns-3 DetNetWiFi Framework), to support the development of mechanisms concerning:
i) uplink Random Access scheduling; ii) multi-AP coordination.

Your tasks:

  • Support the implementation and validation of novel concepts for deterministic wireless,
  • based on ns-3.
  • Get acquainted and assist in the setup and configure hardware and software components of an IIoT prototype involving wireless and wired equipment on the fortiss IIoT Lab.

Your profile:

  • Completed Bachelor's degree and currently enrolled in a Master’s degree or in a PhD degree in computer science, information systems or similar.
  • Practical experience in programming languages such as Java, C, C++.
  • Practical experience with the wireless MAC Layer.
  • Knowledge in IoT and Time Sensitive Networking is preferential.
  • Good understanding on the Linux kernel and drivers.
  • Preferably, experience with networking simulation tools, such as ns-3.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
