fortiss ( is the research and transfer institute of the Free State of Bavaria for the engineering of software-intensive systems. Its headquarters are in Munich and it is associated (“An-Institut”) with the Technical University of Munich for researching and developing Software and Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions to important industrial and societal challenges.

Our research focuses on novel engineering methods for cyber-physical systems (CPS/IoT) which are increasingly societal-scale, and which act autonomously – with applications to intelligent service infrastructure (e.g. smart energy), automated driving, flexible production, and digital government service.

Researcher (m/f/d) –System and Software Architectures

Your tasks:

  • Conduct application-focused research in one of the leading research groups on model-based systems engineering
  • Advance the state of the art in architecture analysis and optimization for cyber-physical system and software architectures
  • Contribute to trend-setting solutions for the upcoming challenges in engineering of safety critical systems such as more flexible and agile development approaches
  • Develop tools and research prototypes to transfer research results and solve important industrial challenges in direct collaboration with our industry partners in the automotive, aerospace, or automation domain
  • Disseminate research results with high-quality publications in leading, internationally recognized scientific journals in the fields of Software & Systems Engineering

Your profile:

  • Outstanding university degree (M.Sc. and/or PhD) in computer science or electrical engineering with a specialization on Software and/or Systems Engineering; e.g. model-based systems engineering, dependable and adaptive system architectures, testing/verification
  • Self-initiative, commitment, goal orientation and willingness to considerably exceed the state-of-the-practice
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Very good implementation skills for creating software-based solutions to tackle important challenges
  • Very good knowledge of English and German in both spoken and written form
  • Experience in Software & Systems Engineering research reflected in scientific publications and / or professional engagement in the relevant international research communities are an advantage
  • Experience with formal methods for the analysis, synthesis or optimization of models is an advantage
