Who are we?
fortiss is the research institute of the Free State of Bavaria for the development of software-intensive systems with headquarters in Munich. The scientists at the institute cooperate in research, development and transfer projects with universities and technology companies in Bavaria, Germany and Europe. The focus is on research into state-of-the-art methods, techniques and tools for the development of software- and AI-based technologies for dependable, secure cyber-physical systems such as the Internet of Things (IoT). fortiss is organized in the legal form of a non-profit limited liability company. To further strengthen our KBSE team, we are looking for:
Researcher (m/f/d) - Knowledge-Based Systemy Engineering (KBSE)
The KBSE competence center of fortiss conducts applied research on knowledge representation and reasoning for cyber-physical production systems following the Industry 4.0 paradigm. We develop means to formally represent relevant information and data on products, services, manufacturing/value creation processes, and the hardware and software components involved therein. The goal is to increase the level of flexibility and autonomy in the design, development and operational phases of robot-based automation systems based on the integrated analysis and interpretation of the introduced semantic models.
We are looking for motivated researchers (early stage or advanced) to join our team.

Researcher (m/f/d) - Knowledge-Based Systemy Engineering (KBSE)
The KBSE competence center of fortiss conducts applied research on knowledge representation and reasoning for cyber-physical production systems following the Industry 4.0 paradigm. We are looking for motivated researchers (early stage or advanced) to join our team.
Your tasks:
- Conduct pioneering and applied research in the KBSE competence center in the areas of knowledge-based manufacturing, systems engineering for cyber-physical production systems, formal knowledge representation and reasoning, semantic web technologies
- Support ongoing national and international research projects regarding software development, scientific dissemination, and technology transfer
- Participate in the supervision of student researchers
- Support the development of advanced training activities, e.g., webinars, seminars, workshops
Your profile:
- Outstanding M.Sc./Ph.D. in computer science with a specialization in symbolic AI and semantic web technologies, or the motivation and ability to quickly acquire required skills.
- Strong background in one or multiple of the areas of interest.
- Excellent analytical, technical and problem-solving skills.
- Interest in mentoring student researchers.
- Excellent communication skills in English, and a basic grasp of the German language that enables participation in German project meetings.
