TITEL (M/W/D)fortiss is the research institute of the Free State of Bavaria for the development of software-intensive systems with headquarters in Munich. The scientists at the institute cooperate in research, development and transfer projects with universities and technology companies in Bavaria, Germany and Europe. The focus is on research into state-of-the-art methods, techniques and tools for the development of software- and AI-based technologies for dependable, secure cyber-physical systems such as the Internet of Things (IoT). fortiss is organized in the legal form of a non-profit limited liability company. The mission of the Industrial IoT at fortiss is to rethink, develop, and validate IIoT systems merging computing, communication, and service automation. Our focus is on novel communication and computation architectures to efficiently, robustly, and possibly predictively deploy and orchestrate heterogeneous and decentralised services and resources.
Today there are several vendor-based smart home applications which are being applied into controlling and automating several aspects of both consumer (e.g., home automation) and industrial (e.g., warehouses) environments. Often, such environments benefit from a direct communication approach, where objects (Things) can directly exchange data. However, the communication between the different elements of IoT connected environments is based on different protocols, being often the choice IP-based communication, due to the interoperability advantages provided by IP in heterogeneous environments.

Master Thesis – Dynamic Orchestration of Containers (m/f/d)
Containers solutions, such as Dockers, are today the basis for most Cloud Computing solutions, and also the basis to provide support to decentralized applications on the Edge of Industrial IoT systems. Containerized applications are managed via solutions such as Kubernetes and Docker Swarm, which provide a way to assist in providing some level of automation of cluster deployment and application management.
With the expansion of micro-service architectures, container orchestration (management) solutions require extensions and additional support to handle a more dynamic migration of tasks, micro-services, and their tasks, aspects which go beyond the common backup and restore approach of containers.
This master thesis is focused on scheduling improvements for dynamic orchestration of containers within the context of Industrial IoT.
- Get acquainted with available container orchestration solutions, including Kubernetes and Docker Swarm
- Setup and configure hardware and software components of an IIoT prototype involving dynamic orchestration of containers in Smart Cities
- Conceive and implement support for management of mobile containers based on prior behaviour, and following requirements to be agreed upon
- Implementation, performance evaluation, and support for the demonstration of the proposed concepts on the fortiss IIoT Lab
- Completed Bachelor's degree and currently enrolled in a Master’s degree in computer science, information systems or similar
- Practical experience in programming languages such as Java, C, C++
- Basic knowledge on IoT aspects, and Kubernetes set up
- Excellent communication skills in English
